LIV02 : SIENA & SAN GIMIGNANO, Journey back through the ages

If you’ve seen the Renaissance splendours of Florence, a great alternative is to travel through Tuscan countryside to one of the most beautiful of Italian cities, SIENA, which has remained intact through the centuries to its honourable past as a wealthy and great rival to Florence and SAN GIMIGNANO, the enchanting hilltop town known as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” owing to the many towers that were built to show the wealth and power of this prosperous commercial city. Today, of the original 76 towers, just 14 have survived.

LIV03 : LUCCA & PISA, Miracles, Masterpieces and Monuments

Get a true feel for Italian living as you discover the enchantments of some of Tuscany’s smaller towns. PISA was once a thriving maritime port with a great navy (it was only in 1998 that the original harbour of Pisa was discovered just 500metres from the Leaning Tower!). LUCCA takes you back in time to 180BC when the city was founded as a Roman colony and has remained intact over the years due to its medieval walls (built between 1504-1645).

LIV04 : CINQUE TERRE & PORTOVENERE, Essence of the Sea

Adventure along the Ligurian coastline by car, pass the ancient waterfront of PORTOVENERE, a colourful fishing village with stunning sea views from the promotory where the little church of San Pietro stands and where Byron spent many of his days. From Portovenere discover the enchanting stretch of protected rocky coastline with the five dramatically situated villages of the CINQUE TERRE, a landscape so unique that in 1990 it was listed as a world heritage site under the protection of UNESCO.

LIV05 : VOLTERRA & SAN GIMIGNANO, Hilltop towns and Medieval Towers

Discover medieval and Etruscan treasures as you explore tow of Tuscany’s most enchanting hilltop villages. Once the centre of Etruscan life and still an important centre for the production of alabaster, VOLTERRA and its environs are rich in archeological remains, both Etruscan and Roman and the Guarnacci Museum holds one of the most interesting displays of Etruscan antiquities in existence. SAN GIMIGNANO is a small and charming hilltop town known as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” owing to the many high towers that were built to show the wealth and power of this prosperous commercial city.
